U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sounded the alarm over the ongoing Democrat-led government shutdown, warning that the economic fallout could reach $15 billion per day if the impasse continues.

In a statement released Thursday, Bessent placed the blame squarely on Democratic leadership, urging moderate Democrats to take action and “be heroes” by reopening the government for the sake of the American people.

“We believe that the shutdown may start costing the U.S. economy up to $15 billion a day, and this is a decision the Democrats are making,” Bessent said. “I am calling for the moderate Democrats to be heroes and reopen the government for the American people.”

The shutdown, now entering its second week, has disrupted federal services, stalled contractor payments, and injected uncertainty into financial markets. Bessent’s remarks highlight the administration’s growing concern over the shutdown’s impact on economic growth and investor confidence.

White House officials maintain that President Trump’s proposed spending reforms are essential to curbing waste and restoring fiscal balance, accusing Democrats of prioritizing political theater over governance.

Economists say the warning reflects the administration’s broader strategy to pressure Congress into a swift resolution before the economic damage deepens.
