James Blasts Benson: Illegals Voted While She Runs Her Own Election

Trump-endorsed Michigan gubernatorial candidate John James unleashed a blistering attack on Democratic rival Jocelyn Benson, accusing the sitting Secretary of State of allowing "dozens of illegals" to vote in Michigan elections while she simultaneously seeks the state's top office. "She's presiding over an election she's running for GOVERNOR in!" James declared, framing Benson's dual role as both election overseer and candidate as a fundamental conflict of interest. The Republican vowed his campaign would "make this election too big to rig," calling on supporters to "swamp the vote" and insisting that "patriots know what's at stake" heading into the race.

James did not stop at election integrity, broadening his critique into a sweeping indictment of Benson's stewardship of the state more generally. He pointed to Michigan's ranking of 46th overall according to U.S. News and World Report, along with a 45th-place education ranking and what he described as crumbling infrastructure, as evidence of institutional failure under the current administration. He also took aim at Lansing directly, arguing that the capital has stripped local communities of control and left residents "devastated" as a result. Taken together, James cast the election as a referendum not just on voting procedures but on the broader direction of the state under Democratic leadership.

The Benson campaign has not yet issued a detailed public response to James's specific accusations regarding noncitizen voting, and no independent findings have been cited to substantiate the claim of "dozens of illegals" casting ballots. Still, James's remarks signal that election integrity and administrative competence will be central battle lines in the race, with the Trump-backed candidate betting that voters are ready for a change in both tone and leadership. As the campaign heats up, expect both sides to trade sharper accusations as Michigan's gubernatorial contest becomes a proxy fight over election security nationwide.
