Trump Declares Total U.S. Control of Hormuz as Iran Digs In on Blockade

Tensions in the Middle East remain dangerously elevated with no diplomatic progress on the horizon. Iran continues to insist that the Strait of Hormuz will stay blocked until its conditions are fully met, directly challenging American authority over the vital waterway. President Trump has firmly countered that assertion, stating the United States holds “total control” of the strait through its naval presence and operational superiority. The competing claims have sharpened an already volatile standoff that threatens global energy security.

Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has collapsed to roughly 13 vessels per day, a dramatic plunge from the pre-conflict average of around 130. Mutual blockades and sporadic attacks have driven traffic to near three-month lows, disrupting the flow of oil and liquefied natural gas that normally accounts for about one-fifth of the world’s supply. The sharp reduction underscores how both sides are using the waterway as strategic leverage while diplomatic efforts remain stalled.

This latest confrontation follows earlier U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran in 2026 and a series of fragile ceasefire attempts that have failed to produce lasting results. Iran’s refusal to reopen the strait on any terms short of its full demands highlights the regime’s willingness to hold global markets hostage. Meanwhile, President Trump’s clear assertion of American control signals a resolute stance that prioritizes free navigation and regional stability over Iranian obstruction. As long as Tehran maintains its blockade, the risk of further escalation continues to hang over one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
