A Russian Shahed drone struck an inoperable wind turbine near Kramatorsk in Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast on October 24, 2025, in one of the latest incidents highlighting the vulnerability of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amid Russia’s intensified autumn offensive. Video footage released by local officials showed the drone impacting the turbine, followed by rising smoke and visible blade damage shortly after the explosion.

According to Ukraine’s energy ministry, the strike forms part of a renewed Russian campaign targeting the nation’s power generation capacity. Since early October, coordinated missile and drone attacks have halved Ukraine’s overall energy output, raising fears of widespread blackouts as winter approaches. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) also confirmed that Russia’s current operations are increasingly focused on crippling Ukraine’s energy resilience.

Although the damaged wind turbine was already non-operational, the attack underscores the heightened risk facing renewable infrastructure in conflict zones. Ukraine’s wind sector — which contributed roughly 2% of its pre-war electricity production — has become a target of concern as Moscow intensifies efforts to undermine both the country’s civilian energy supply and morale.

Experts warn that renewable energy sites, despite their decentralized advantages, remain highly exposed to asymmetric drone warfare. Recent studies on wartime energy systems have shown that wind and solar facilities can suffer heavy operational losses when located near active frontlines.

For Ukraine, the incident symbolizes more than a localized hit — it is part of a broader assault on national resilience. As Russian drones continue to strike energy assets across eastern and southern Ukraine, officials are urging stronger Western air defense support to safeguard remaining infrastructure and prevent further degradation of the country’s energy independence.
