KAMCHATKA, RUSSIA — Newly released satellite imagery appears to show damage to a Russian nuclear submarine base on the country’s Pacific coast after the powerful tsunami triggered by last week’s 8.8-magnitude earthquake.

The base, located in Kamchatka and critical to Russia’s Pacific naval fleet, shows evidence of flooding and possible infrastructure damage as tsunami waves swept through the coastline. Analysts say water inundation and debris patterns visible from above suggest that support facilities and piers may have been compromised, though there is no official word yet from the Russian Ministry of Defense on the status of its nuclear-capable submarines.

The tsunami, which followed a massive undersea quake off the Kamchatka Peninsula, affected coastal towns and ports throughout the region. While Russia has not confirmed any military damage, security experts note that even minor impacts at such a sensitive base could raise questions about strategic readiness in the Pacific theater.

International observers and defense analysts are continuing to review satellite images for signs of further damage or disruptions to Russia’s submarine operations.
