Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney admitted that Ottawa no longer has influence over U.S. trade policy, acknowledging that Washington’s approach under President Trump marks a decisive departure from the free-trade era of past decades. Speaking to reporters, Carney said Canada must “recognize that policy has fundamentally changed” from the globalist framework of the 1980s through the 2000s, and that the United States has adopted tariffs against nearly all major trading partners as part of its national economic defense strategy.

Carney’s remarks underscore the lasting global impact of Trump’s “America First” trade realignment—a policy designed to strengthen U.S. manufacturing, protect domestic jobs, and rebalance decades of one-sided trade relationships that had favored foreign competitors.

While Carney emphasized that Canada intends to develop new partnerships and “opportunities including with the economic giants of Asia,” the statement reflects a clear acknowledgment that the United States has reasserted its economic sovereignty. Under Trump’s administration, tariffs and trade controls have become strategic tools to defend U.S. interests against unfair trade practices from China, the European Union, and others.

For Canada, which relies heavily on access to the U.S. market, the new environment presents both challenges and lessons. The shift away from multilateral trade dependency has forced allied nations to adapt to a system where Washington now prioritizes reciprocal and results-based agreements rather than symbolic international pledges.

Carney’s recognition of this reality reflects the broader global acknowledgment that the U.S. economy remains the anchor of the world’s financial system—and that nations seeking long-term prosperity must now operate within the framework of America’s new, assertive economic vision.
