Israel and Morocco have agreed to take their diplomatic relationship to the next level, upgrading their liaison offices into full embassies and formally appointing ambassadors for the first time. The breakthrough came out of a trilateral meeting in New York between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, hosted by US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz. Sa'ar called the friendship between the Moroccan and Jewish peoples deep-rooted and historic, saying the declaration signed lays out practical steps both sides now intend to implement. Beyond the embassy upgrade, the two countries also agreed to expand direct flights, hold high-level visits in the coming months, and finalize investment protection and double-taxation agreements by the end of 2026.

The announcement lands just one day after Waltz marked the sixth anniversary of the Abraham Accords at an event in New York, with representatives from the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Kazakhstan also in attendance. Morocco first restored ties with Israel back in December 2020 under those accords, but relations had remained limited to lower-level liaison offices until now, making this the most significant step forward for the relationship in years. The upgrade signals continued American investment in expanding and deepening Abraham Accords normalization, even as Israel has, at the time of the announcement, been the primary source confirming the terms. If fully carried out, the shift is expected to boost trade, tourism, and travel between the two countries well beyond where it stands today.
