SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — A 57-year-old man was killed in a shark attack while surfing with friends near Dee Why Beach, prompting widespread beach closures along Sydney’s northern coastline.

Authorities said the man was mauled close to shore and died before rescuers could pull him from the water. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after the attack, with drone footage capturing the urgent response.

In the wake of the incident, officials ordered beaches closed from Manly to Narrabeen for at least 24 hours as patrols monitor for shark activity. The closure affects one of Sydney’s busiest stretches of surf and swimming spots.

The attack has renewed debate over shark safety measures in New South Wales, where authorities balance swimmer safety with conservation concerns.
