A terrifying scene unfolded on Mexico's Arco Norte highway near Ajoloapan when a crane truck lost control on a curve and slammed into concrete barriers, overturning and bursting into a massive fireball that sent thick black smoke pouring into the sky. Dramatic footage captured the crane operator scrambling out of the cab and sprinting clear just moments before the flames fully engulfed the vehicle. Nearby, another man was seen frantically climbing over the concrete median to escape the wreckage and fire on the rain-slicked road, narrowly avoiding the blaze himself. The crane had been responding to an earlier crash that brought traffic to a standstill when it lost control in the curve leading toward Ajoloapan and struck the barrier head-on.
The September 28 incident ultimately triggered a chain-reaction pile-up involving as many as nine vehicles, including a livestock trailer, turning a routine traffic jam into a full-blown highway disaster. Authorities confirmed five people suffered minor injuries in the crash, while emergency crews worked for hours to extinguish the flames and clear the wreckage from the roadway. The chaos forced highway officials to shut down both directions of the Arco Norte for an extended period, creating massive backups that stretched for kilometers in the area between the State of Mexico and Hidalgo. Investigators are still working to determine exactly how the initial collision escalated into the fiery crane crash that nearly claimed two more lives.
