Senator Mark Kelly criticized comments by Stephen Miller suggesting that the United States could seize Greenland without facing military resistance, calling such rhetoric “un-American” and likening it to Russian-style territorial aggression.

In a recent clip, Kelly said, “With force that we're going to take your territory, is that who we've become? That's Russia. We are not that kind of a nation.” He emphasized that the U.S. must adhere to international rules and legal frameworks rather than pursuing unilateral territorial acquisitions.

The controversy revives discussion of former President Trump’s 2019 proposal to purchase Greenland, originally framed as a strategic measure to strengthen Arctic defense against Russia and China. Kelly’s remarks come amid heightened attention following a social media post by Miller’s wife featuring the Greenland flag captioned “SOON” and Trump reaffirming the territory’s strategic importance for U.S. security objectives.

Kelly stressed that American power should be exercised responsibly, respecting sovereignty and international norms, rather than pursuing aggressive or unilateral territorial claims. Analysts note that the debate highlights tension between Trump-era strategic ambitions in the Arctic and the broader expectation that U.S. foreign policy adhere to the rule of law.

By contrasting U.S. strategy with Russian imperial tactics, Kelly positioned his argument within a long-standing bipartisan commitment to uphold international agreements and maintain credibility with allies, even while discussing the Arctic region’s growing geopolitical significance.
