A routine skydiving flight over Wisconsin turned into a life-saving emergency mission in seconds. John Bechtel and two fellow experienced jumpers were high above East Troy when they watched a small plane suddenly disappear behind a line of trees, and something told them it was not a normal landing. Without hesitating, the group asked their pilot to find a safe drop zone, then leaped from their own aircraft and parachuted straight into the cornfield where the plane had gone down. One of the skydivers, a former paramedic, immediately began treating a passenger with a serious head injury while the others worked to alert emergency crews and secure the scene before first responders arrived.
Bechtel later described the moment as almost impossibly well-timed, saying, "The timing couldn't have been any better. Had we left five minutes earlier, we wouldn't have seen it; if we left 15 minutes later, we wouldn't have been able to get there to assist." All four people aboard the crashed single-engine plane, which came down just south of East Troy Municipal Airport, are expected to recover fully thanks in part to the skydivers' quick action. Bechtel, who has jumped across Wisconsin for three decades, called it the first time he has ever jumped to help in someone else's emergency, adding simply, "I would absolutely do that in a heartbeat." The cause of the crash remains under investigation by federal aviation authorities.
