NATURE'S SURPISE: Humpback's Blow Suddenly Bursts Into Rainbow.

A breathtaking scene unfolded off California’s South Bay when drone operator Mauricio Tassara captured a humpback whale appearing to create a rainbow with every powerful exhalation. The remarkable footage, recorded on August 16, shows colorful arcs forming inside the whale’s misty blow as sunlight passes through thousands of tiny water droplets. What looks almost impossible at first glance is actually a rare combination of natural physics, sunlight and perfect positioning.
The phenomenon is commonly known among whale watchers as a “rainblow,” a playful term for the rainbow-like effect produced when moisture from a whale’s blow catches sunlight at the right angle. A whale’s exhalation contains warm, moist air and droplets that can become highly visible above the ocean surface, creating the conditions needed for sunlight to separate into its familiar spectrum of colors. The effect can disappear almost instantly if the sun, whale and observer are not aligned correctly.
Tassara’s elevated drone position offered an unusually clear perspective that would be difficult to achieve from a boat or shoreline. From above, the camera was able to capture multiple instances of the rainbow appearing within the whale’s spray, transforming an ordinary breathing sequence into something that looked almost deliberately staged by nature. The footage also highlights how dramatically a simple change in viewing angle can reveal details that are nearly invisible from the surface.
Humpback whales are frequent visitors to California waters, where they can be observed during feeding and migration periods, but witnessing a rainblow still depends heavily on conditions falling into place. Bright sunlight, suitable atmospheric conditions, calm enough water and the whale’s position relative to the observer all have to cooperate at the same moment. That combination makes these colorful displays particularly striking, even in areas where whales themselves are regularly seen.
The spectacular footage raises a simple but fascinating question: how many extraordinary moments like this are happening just offshore without anyone being in the right place to see them? For Tassara, the combination of a surfacing humpback, brilliant sunlight and an overhead drone created a fleeting natural masterpiece. In a matter of seconds, the whale’s ordinary breath became one of those rare wildlife encounters that looks almost too perfect to be real.
