Oblivious Fisherman Nearly Bumps Into Massive Bison at Yellowstone

A quiet fishing trip at Yellowstone National Park turned into a nail-biting moment for onlookers after a man was caught on camera completely unaware that a massive bison had wandered up behind him. In the now-viral video, the fisherman can be seen casting his line with his back turned, seemingly lost in the moment, while the bison grazes and slowly closes the distance between them. Concerned parkgoers, watching the animal drift closer with each passing second, eventually began shouting warnings, and one passing vehicle even leaned on its horn in an effort to snap the man's attention away from the water.

The alert worked. Once the fisherman realized just how close the bison had gotten, he calmly turned, avoided direct eye contact, and backed away without any sudden movements, exactly the kind of measured response wildlife experts recommend in these situations. The bison, for its part, showed no signs of aggression throughout the encounter and continued grazing undisturbed as the man put distance between himself and the animal. Yellowstone officials have long warned that despite their seemingly docile, slow-moving appearance, bison are unpredictable and powerful animals capable of sudden, dangerous charges when they feel threatened.

Park guidelines instruct visitors to stay at least 25 yards away from bison at all times, a rule the fisherman was fortunate enough to end up honoring once alerted to the danger. Yellowstone sees several bison-related injuries every year, most of them the result of tourists getting too close in pursuit of a better photo or video. This latest close call is already being held up online as a valuable reminder that the park's wildlife, however peaceful it may look from a distance, always deserves a healthy amount of caution and respect.
