NYPD Ramps Up Security as 25th Anniversary of 9/11 Coincides with Erev Rosh Hashanah

This year, the 25th anniversary of the horrific September 11 terror attacks carries a unique significance for New York's Jewish community, as the solemn day falls out on Friday, Erev Rosh Hashanah 5787. Just hours after the city commemorates a quarter-century since the attacks that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people, hundreds of thousands of Yidden will gather in Batei Medrash across the city to usher in the new year.

The convergence of these two major events has prompted a massive security operation. The NYPD is gearing up for a dual-front deployment: maintaining a heavy police presence at the central memorial ceremonies around Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan throughout the day, while simultaneously dispatching additional forces to patrol Batei Medrash, yeshivos, and Jewish community centers across the five boroughs ahead of the zman.
