F-35 Erupts Into Flames at Miramar as Pilot Ejects Just in Time

A Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II stealth fighter crashed and burst into flames Friday morning at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky in dramatic scenes captured by local news helicopters. The jet, assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11 of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, went down short of the runway at approximately 10 a.m. local time as it was coming in to land. Aerial footage showed the aircraft broken apart and engulfed in smoke in a dirt field near the base, with fire crews and military vehicles rushing to the scene to battle the flames and a resulting brush fire.

In a moment that could have easily turned tragic, the Marine pilot ejected safely just before impact and was transported to a local medical facility, where officials confirmed the aviator sustained only non-life-threatening injuries and was listed in stable condition. The Marine Corps officially classified the incident as a Class A mishap, the most serious designation in military aviation, reserved for events involving a fatality, a destroyed aircraft, or damage exceeding two million dollars. No other injuries were reported, and officials say the fire that spread into a nearby field was quickly contained by base firefighting crews.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with the Marine Corps saying additional details will be released as they become available. The F-35B, a short-takeoff-and-vertical-landing variant of the fifth-generation Lightning II built for Marine Corps and amphibious operations, carries a price tag of roughly $109 million per aircraft, underscoring the scale of the loss even as officials rightly emphasize that the pilot's survival is what matters most. Miramar, once home to the Navy's legendary "Top Gun" fighter pilot school, continues to serve as a critical training and operations hub for Marine aviation, and officials say flight operations at the base are expected to continue as the investigation proceeds.
