Polish Pilgrim Bus Overturns in Hungary, Killing 12 in Deadly Crash

A Polish tourist bus carrying pilgrims overturned in a ditch in eastern Hungary early on August 16, 2026, leaving 12 people dead and at least 10 others injured. The vehicle, which had 57 passengers and two drivers on board, was returning from the Medjugorje shrine in Bosnia when it veered off the M3 motorway near Mezőkeresztes around 1 a.m. Dramatic footage from the scene shows a badly damaged red bus lying on its side with smashed windows and personal belongings scattered across the roadside. Hungarian police have taken the driver into custody after preliminary findings indicated he likely fell asleep at the wheel.

Emergency crews worked through the night to free trapped passengers, some of whom had to be pulled from under seats or through broken windows amid scenes survivors described as unimaginable. The bus had been traveling toward Nyíregyháza when it left the straight stretch of road and tipped into the ditch. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar and Polish leaders quickly issued statements of condolence, with Warsaw arranging special assistance for the victims and their families. Hospitals in the region treated the injured, including several in serious condition.

This heartbreaking accident has shocked communities in both Poland and Hungary, especially given the religious nature of the journey home from a major Catholic pilgrimage site. Investigations continue into the exact circumstances, but the scale of the loss underscores the dangers of long overnight journeys and the critical importance of driver alertness. Families and friends of those lost now face the painful process of mourning while authorities work to provide support and answers.
