China Defends Iran! Beijing Rejects US Sanctions as โ€œIllegalโ€ While Buying Nearly All Tehranโ€™s Oil

Chinaโ€™s Foreign Ministry on Friday rejected U.S. sanctions against Iran as โ€œillegal unilateralโ€ measures that lack any basis in international law or United Nations Security Council authorization. Spokesperson Lin Jian stated that โ€œsanctions and pressure will not help resolve the issueโ€ and called instead for political and diplomatic solutions, effectively dismissing Washingtonโ€™s push for tougher economic isolation of the Iranian regime. The comments came as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged Beijing to cooperate on what he described as the toughest sanctions in history aimed at cutting off Iranโ€™s remaining revenue streams. Chinaโ€™s stance directly undermines efforts to defund a regime that continues to threaten U.S. interests, Israel, and regional stability.

The practical reality is even more damaging. China currently purchases the overwhelming majority of Iranโ€™s oil exportsโ€”often estimated at 80 to 90 percent or more according to tracking data from firms like Kpler and assessments from U.S. sources. Without Beijingโ€™s cooperation in reducing or ending these purchases, new Western sanctions will have almost zero meaningful impact on the Iranian regimeโ€™s ability to fund its nuclear program, ballistic missiles, and network of proxy terrorists. Even as the United States has intensified efforts to curb Iranian oil shipments through blockades and enforcement, Chinaโ€™s continued demand provides Tehran with a critical financial lifeline that keeps the regime solvent and aggressive.

This episode exposes the fundamental challenge facing any serious campaign to pressure Iran: China is not a neutral bystander but an active economic enabler of the regime. By rejecting sanctions and maintaining its dominant role as Iranโ€™s top oil customer, Beijing prioritizes its own energy needs and strategic partnership with Tehran over global security and the safety of Americaโ€™s allies, including Israel. Strong leadership under President Trump has correctly identified the need for maximum pressure on Iran, yet that pressure cannot succeed if the worldโ€™s second-largest economy continues to bankroll the very regime Washington seeks to constrain. The time has come for clearer consequences for those who choose to sustain Iranโ€™s threats rather than join the effort to end them.
