A violent gang-related riot broke out in a prison in southern Ecuador, leaving 14 people dead and 14 others injured, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred at a correctional facility in Machala, where prisoners clashed with police officers. According to Police Chief William Calle, one prison guard was killed during the chaos, while others were briefly taken hostage by inmates.

The confrontation reportedly lasted around 40 minutes before law enforcement managed to regain control of the facility. Security forces have since reinforced the prison to prevent further unrest.

Prison riots have become a recurring problem in Ecuador, often linked to gang rivalries and organized crime within correctional institutions. The government has faced growing pressure to address overcrowding and improve security measures to prevent such deadly outbreaks.
