Researchers from ETH Zurich and the Robotic Systems Lab have unveiled a fully autonomous excavator capable of constructing a dry-stone wall without any human hands guiding the process. The machine, named Heap, built a structure stretching 65 meters long and standing six meters high, a feat that pushes the boundaries of what robotic construction can achieve. Rather than relying on manual operation, Heap scanned its surroundings and each available stone before deciding exactly where to place it, mimicking the careful judgment of a skilled mason. The result is a wall built entirely through machine perception and decision-making, marking a significant milestone in autonomous heavy machinery.

Behind the wall's construction lies a sophisticated system of computer-aided design paired with real-time robotic control, allowing Heap to manage the placement of more than 900 individual stones. Some of these elements weighed over 1,000 kilograms, requiring precise calculations of balance, weight distribution, and positioning to ensure structural stability. This level of autonomous handling demonstrates how robotics can take on physically demanding and highly technical construction tasks once thought to require constant human oversight. As the technology matures, innovations like Heap could reshape how large-scale infrastructure and landscaping projects are approached in the future.
