The relationship between the company and the administration has been rocky, with a federal appeals court upholding the Pentagon's blacklisting of Anthropic in a 2-1 decision just days ago, and the dinner is being read as a possible thaw. It also puts two opposing views at the same table: Amodei published an essay on September 12 urging the industry to deliberately slow the pace of AI progress, and the heads of rivals such as OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and xAI have also called for slowing development. Administration officials, including Attorney General Todd Blanche, counter that existing laws already give the government the tools to go after bad actors. A bigger meeting with top AI executives and House Speaker Mike Johnson is set for Tuesday, where the debate over guardrails is expected to take center stage.
