Brayton Laschinger, the 30-year-old Sarasota man accused of hurling a brick through the front window of Chabad of Downtown SRQ, is set to be arraigned on a felony charge of criminal mischief to a religious building, enhanced under Florida's hate crime statute. Surveillance footage from the July 29 incident shows a man wearing a blue towel over his head and face approaching the synagogue on Cocoanut Avenue around 6 a.m. and throwing a brick through the glass multiple times until it shattered. Police said Laschinger's own roommate helped identify him from the footage, and that he later confessed to detectives, admitting he targeted the building specifically because it was a Jewish place of worship.

According to the Sarasota Police Department, Laschinger told investigators he had seen "propaganda" on social media that same morning that made him angry, though the department's public statements have not identified any specific post, account, or video as the source of that anger, nor established a direct causal link between any particular piece of content and his actions. Some reports and social media commentary have pointed to a video from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, in which Mamdani referred to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a war criminal, noting that Laschinger had reportedly reposted the clip days before the attack. That connection has not been confirmed by police or prosecutors, and no charging documents reviewed so far tie the case to Mamdani or any specific figure by name.

The attack caused an estimated $5,000 or more in damage and is being treated by authorities as part of a troubling rise in antisemitic incidents nationwide, including a prior arson attack at a Chabad location in nearby Punta Gorda. As Laschinger's case moves through the court system, the broader debate over what role, if any, online rhetoric played in motivating the attack is likely to continue, even as investigators and prosecutors focus their public statements on the confirmed facts: a masked man, a brick, a shattered window, and a confession that he chose the target because it was a synagogue.
