Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour has announced his bid to lead the UN General Assembly for the 2026-2027 term, igniting controversy due to his long history of defending Hamas and criticizing Israel on the world stage. Mansour, who refers to Hamas members as “our brothers,” has repeatedly framed the Hamas-controlled Gaza leadership as part of the broader Palestinian national struggle.

Critics point to several actions that raise serious concerns about his candidacy. Mansour has defended Hamas in UN forums during times of conflict, accused Israel of “genocide,” and consistently presented Hamas’s leadership as legitimate interlocutors in negotiations. A video clip from a 2024 UN speech, in which he explicitly calls Hamas “our brother” while advocating for ceasefire negotiations, has drawn widespread attention.

Mansour’s candidacy, formally announced in March 2025 and endorsed by the Arab League, has drawn strong opposition from Israeli officials and their allies. Critics argue that elevating a figure with close ties to Hamas to lead the UN General Assembly could serve as a “back door” attempt to enhance Palestinian influence internationally, raising questions about the suitability of such leadership in a body meant to represent all nations, including free and democratic states.

The bid underscores the broader tensions within the UN over representation, legitimacy, and accountability, particularly regarding figures associated with militant organizations. Observers note that if Mansour succeeds, it would mark a significant challenge for Israel’s diplomatic efforts and for the credibility of the General Assembly in addressing conflicts fairly and objectively.
