Senate Majority Leader John Thune delivered a blistering rebuke of Senate Democrats on the floor Thursday, accusing them of hypocrisy for lamenting food insecurity among Americans while repeatedly voting against measures designed to strengthen the economy and support working families.

“Absolutely right — SNAP recipients shouldn’t go without food,” Thune declared passionately. “People should be getting paid in this country, and we’ve tried to do that 13 TIMES! You voted NO 13 TIMES! This isn’t a political game; these are real people’s lives.”

The South Dakota Republican’s remarks came amid a heated debate over funding for federal nutrition programs and broader economic relief efforts. Thune argued that Democrats have blocked multiple Republican-led bills aimed at boosting job creation, expanding wage incentives, and supporting small businesses — all of which, he said, would have helped millions of low-income Americans achieve long-term stability rather than dependence on government assistance.

Thune’s tone reflected growing frustration within GOP ranks over what they view as partisan obstruction in Congress. Despite bipartisan rhetoric about helping families, Democrats have consistently opposed Republican proposals tied to fiscal responsibility and economic independence. “We’ve been ready to work,” Thune said. “They’ve been ready to campaign.”

The Majority Leader emphasized that under President Trump’s leadership, the Republican Party remains committed to putting working Americans first — not bureaucrats in Washington. “Our priority is jobs, not politics. Paychecks, not promises,” he said.

Thune’s fiery remarks quickly gained traction online, with conservatives praising his directness and defense of working families. The exchange highlighted the growing divide in Washington between two visions for America’s future: one focused on empowering workers through opportunity, and another fixated on expanding dependency through endless spending.
