The Israel Defense Forces have launched a large-scale military exercise in the Eilat area and along the eastern border. The drill is led by the 80th Division and focuses on tactics and procedures developed from lessons of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks. All units of the division are taking part, alongside elements of the Air Force and Navy, as well as other security forces. The military stressed that the activity is planned and that there is no immediate security threat in the region.

The exercise, known as Operation “Kadmat Homa” or Advancing the Wall, aims to strengthen readiness for surprise attacks and a range of extreme scenarios. Forces are practicing responses to multi-site incidents, rapid coordination, control of traffic routes, and the defense of communities under sudden assault. Residents and visitors in and around Eilat have been advised to expect increased movements of troops, vehicles, aircraft and naval vessels during the drill. Officials reiterated that these movements are part of the scheduled training and not a response to any real-time incident.

The Eilat exercise follows closely on a broader multi-front surprise drill called “Breaking Dawn 2.0,” directed by the IDF Chief of Staff. That earlier exercise tested the military’s ability to respond simultaneously across several arenas. Together the two drills form part of heightened preparations ahead of the holiday period, when security forces traditionally raise alert levels. The focus on October 7 lessons reflects ongoing efforts to address shortcomings exposed during the 2023 attacks and to improve inter-service coordination.

Scenarios being practiced include infiltrations from land, sea or air, the management of multiple simultaneous scenes, and the rapid deployment of forces to protect civilian areas. Police forces are also participating under a related operation in the southern district. The combined effort is intended to ensure that different branches of the security establishment can operate together effectively under pressure. Officials described the training as based on a deep analysis of the events of October 7 and the need for constant high readiness along Israel’s borders.

The 80th Division is responsible for the sector that includes Eilat and stretches along the eastern border. Conducting the exercise in this area allows forces to train in realistic terrain while also signaling the importance of preparedness in a region that has been identified as potentially vulnerable. The military has emphasized that the drill is defensive in nature and designed to deter and respond to threats rather than signal any offensive intention.

As the exercise continues, the visible presence of forces in Eilat serves as both a training opportunity and a demonstration of heightened readiness. The IDF has made clear that such drills will remain a regular feature of its efforts to incorporate hard-won lessons from past attacks. For the public in the area, the temporary increase in military activity is presented as a necessary step to strengthen security ahead of the holidays and beyond.
