New video circulating from Houthi channels appears to show a young boy, believed to be under 15, handling a heavy weapon on the front lines in Yemen, reigniting outrage over the group's continued use of child soldiers. The footage comes despite the Houthis having signed a United Nations action plan pledging to end the recruitment and use of children in the conflict. Yet UN monitors and independent human rights groups say the practice never stopped, documenting more than 127 verified cases of child recruitment by the Houthis in 2026 alone, some involving direct combat roles. Rights organizations argue the video is not an isolated slip but part of a pattern the group has openly tolerated for years.

The renewed fighting sweeping Yemen in recent months has only made the problem worse, with researchers reporting a fresh surge in child recruitment across multiple factions as manpower needs grow. Investigators say the Houthis have been running military-style summer camps that funnel boys, some barely into their teens, toward the front lines. International monitors have repeatedly flagged the group in annual reports on children and armed conflict, yet accountability has remained elusive as the war grinds on. For families in Houthi-controlled areas, the footage is a grim reminder that a promise made to the world in 2022 has done little to keep their children out of the fighting.
