A tragic incident at an unlicensed private daycare in Jerusalem’s Romema neighborhood has left two infants dead and approximately 55 toddlers hospitalized. The two infants, a boy around four months old and a girl aged three to four months, were initially found in critical condition and later pronounced dead at local hospitals.

Emergency responders, including United Hatzalah teams, arrived quickly at the overcrowded facility, where 55 children were reportedly confined in apartments far exceeding legal occupancy limits of 20. Distressing conditions were documented, including mattresses stacked in bathrooms and hallways. Video footage from the scene shows EMTs and psychotrauma teams rapidly evacuating children and assisting distressed families.

Authorities initially suspected carbon monoxide poisoning but have since ruled it out. Police detained three caregivers for questioning as investigations continue into potential negligence or foul play. Forensic experts are examining whether extreme heat or a malfunctioning heating device may have contributed to the incident.

The tragedy has sparked public outrage, with calls for stricter licensing enforcement and tighter supervision of private daycare facilities in Jerusalem. Officials are working to ensure the remaining children are safe while reviewing regulatory compliance and emergency response protocols.

This incident highlights vulnerabilities in unlicensed childcare operations and underscores the critical role of volunteer and emergency medical organizations in responding to mass casualties in Israel.
