Dashcam-style video captured by the Colorado State Patrol shows a heart-stopping moment on I-70 near Keystone, where a semi-truck with smoking brakes barrels toward one of the highway's emergency escape ramps. As the driver steers into the deep gravel bed, the truck plows forward, kicking up a massive cloud of dust that briefly swallows it from view. Rather than careening down the mountain grade out of control, the loose gravel does exactly what it was engineered to do, generating enough resistance to rapidly drag the runaway rig to a stop. No injuries, no collisions, and no damage beyond a truck buried in dirt and a badly rattled driver.

Escape ramps like this one are a standard safety feature on steep mountain corridors such as I-70 through the Colorado Rockies, where long, punishing downhill grades regularly cook truckers' brakes to the point of failure. Instead of relying on friction alone, these ramps use gravity and deep, loose gravel or sand to absorb a runaway vehicle's momentum, often bringing a fully loaded semi to a stop within a few hundred feet. Crews in the area report responding to dozens of similar incidents every year, a reminder of just how often the ramps quietly do their job away from the spotlight. This latest close call is now circulating as a stark, dusty example of engineered infrastructure working exactly as intended when a driver's brakes simply give out.
