A remarkable winter spectacle unfolded on Lake Michigan this week as rare “pancake ice” formations spread across the water near St. Joseph, creating a vast mosaic of circular ice discs that stretched for miles. Drone footage captured the phenomenon on February 11, 2026, revealing hundreds of rounded floes—some measuring between three and ten feet in diameter—drifting and gently colliding across the lake’s surface.

Pancake ice forms under a precise combination of meteorological and hydrodynamic conditions. Sub-freezing temperatures, hovering around 20 degrees Fahrenheit during the period, allow frazil ice—small, needle-like crystals that develop in supercooled turbulent water—to accumulate. Wind and wave action then compress these fragments into rounded shapes, with repeated collisions smoothing their edges and building up slightly raised rims. The result is a field of nearly uniform discs that resemble floating stepping stones across the water.

While pancake ice is not unheard of in the Great Lakes during severe winters, the scale and visual clarity of this year’s formation have made it particularly striking. According to NOAA data, such ice can cover up to 20 percent of Lake Michigan’s surface during harsh cold spells, but favorable lighting, calm intervals between wind bursts, and aerial imaging combined to produce especially vivid views of the pattern.

Beyond its visual appeal, the presence of extensive frazil and pancake ice indicates sustained cold air masses and significant heat exchange between the relatively warmer lake and the atmosphere. These processes play a role in moderating regional weather, influencing lake-effect snowfall, and affecting maritime navigation. For vessels operating in the region, pancake ice can pose hazards by accumulating along hulls and restricting maneuverability.

Environmental observers note that the formation also reflects the dynamic nature of the Great Lakes in winter, where shifting winds and temperature gradients can rapidly transform open water into complex ice structures. The mosaic near St. Joseph serves as a reminder of the powerful interaction between atmosphere and freshwater systems, turning a routine cold spell into a rare and visually compelling natural display.

As temperatures fluctuate in the coming days, much of the pancake ice is expected to break apart or consolidate into larger sheets, making the window for viewing the phenomenon relatively brief. For now, the drifting discs offer a fleeting but extraordinary snapshot of winter’s influence on one of North America’s largest freshwater bodies.
