Trump Fires Back at Media 'Sob Story' Over USS Lincoln Deployment

President Trump brushed aside a wave of media reports about conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln on Friday, flatly rejecting the premise that families of the roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the carrier are worried about their loved ones. Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews, Trump was told that family members had raised concerns about the ship's conditions during its historic deployment. "No, they're not," he said, before confirming that the carrier is already on its way home and will soon be relieved by the USS George Washington as part of a long-planned rotation. Asked directly whether the deployment, which has stretched past 260 days and set a modern record for consecutive days at sea, had gone on too long, Trump was unequivocal: "No, no, no. Not nearly long enough."

The president's comments came as he pushed back hard against what his administration views as a media effort to cast American sailors as victims rather than warriors carrying out a demanding but essential mission supporting operations against Iran. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed that sentiment a day earlier, calling reports on the Lincoln's conditions "completely misrepresented" and praising the crew's resilience under some of the toughest operating conditions the Navy faces. Trump went further, accusing outlets covering the story of being "dishonest" and warning that the coverage risks shifting focus away from the real threat the mission is designed to counter: Iran and its nuclear ambitions.

The Navy, for its part, has said it has not observed any increase in suicidal ideation or attempts aboard the ship, though officials have declined to release detailed data, citing operational security and patient privacy. With the George Washington already en route to relieve the Lincoln and bring the crew home, the administration is framing the record-setting deployment not as a crisis to be apologized for, but as a testament to the sacrifice and professionalism of the men and women keeping pressure on Iran until the mission is finished.
