A distracted truck driver caused a dramatic highway incident in New Jersey after veering into a traffic control zone and striking a parked police cruiser during an overnight traffic assignment. The crash occurred at approximately 2:40 a.m. on March 15, 2026, along Route 1 in South Brunswick, where officers had set up cones and signage to guide motorists safely through the area.

Dashcam footage from the scene captured the tense moments as the tractor-trailer approached the controlled section of the roadway in the dark. Instead of remaining within the open travel lane, the truck suddenly swerved off course and entered the clearly marked traffic zone.

As the vehicle moved through the area, it struck more than 50 traffic cones in rapid succession, sending them scattering across the roadway. The truck then clipped an illuminated arrow board designed to direct traffic away from the work area before continuing forward and crashing into the rear of a parked South Brunswick police cruiser.

Despite the force of the impact, the officer sitting inside the patrol vehicle was not injured. Authorities confirmed that the cruiser sustained no visible major structural damage, and the officer was able to exit the vehicle safely after the collision. Emergency responders quickly secured the scene to ensure traffic could continue moving safely through the area.

The dashcam video shows the truck driver correcting course immediately after the impact and steering the vehicle back into the proper lane of travel. Investigators later confirmed that the incident was caused by driver distraction, though authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the specific cause.

Traffic control zones are designed to protect officers, emergency responders, and roadway workers who operate near moving vehicles. Safety officials repeatedly stress the importance of slowing down and paying close attention when approaching cones, signage, or emergency vehicles with flashing lights.

While this incident ended without injuries, it serves as a stark reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face when performing roadside duties. Even routine assignments can become dangerous within seconds if drivers fail to remain alert behind the wheel.

Authorities are continuing to review the incident and determine whether charges or citations will be issued against the driver as part of the ongoing investigation.
