Graham's Bold Iran Collapse Prediction Crumbles as Regime Clings to Power

Back in early March, Senator Lindsey Graham made a bold prediction from the back of a car, telling cameras that Iran's regime would lose control of its cities within three to four weeks. Graham argued that surging Arab involvement in the region would create what he called "almost irreversible momentum" toward the collapse of the Islamic Republic. It was a striking claim from one of Washington's most vocal Iran hawks, delivered at a moment when U.S. and Israeli strikes had just delivered one of the most devastating blows in the regime's history: the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei himself.

What followed was indeed historic. The joint U.S.-Israeli campaign systematically dismantled much of Iran's military and nuclear infrastructure, eliminating senior commanders and forcing the Assembly of Experts to hastily install Khamenei's son, Mojtaba, as the country's new supreme leader. But rather than the total collapse Graham forecasted, the fighting gave way to a ceasefire by June, followed by a memorandum of understanding and an ongoing 60-day negotiating track that remains fragile to this day. Five months on from Graham's prediction, the Islamic Republic has not fallen — it has adapted.

Now, as of late July, Mojtaba Khamenei sits atop a regime battered by war, economic strain, and months of internal unrest, yet still very much intact. Large state funerals for his slain father drew crowds chanting familiar anti-American slogans, a visible display of the regime's enduring grip even after losing its supreme leader and a generation of military commanders. Graham's timeline may have been premature, but the underlying strikes he championed inflicted real and lasting damage on Tehran's ability to project power — a reminder that even a wounded regime can still find ways to survive, at least for now.
