Hegseth Declares Effectively Zero Illegal Crossings for Over a Year

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth declared that illegal border crossings have been effectively zero for more than a year under the Trump administration’s policies. Speaking recently, Hegseth emphasized that the United States decided to defend its own soil and homeland by deploying troops and enforcing the law. The statement reflects the dramatic turnaround achieved since the administration took office and made border security a top national priority. Officials credit the combination of military support, strict enforcement, and clear policy signals for the sustained results. This achievement stands in sharp contrast to the record chaos of the previous years.

Customs and Border Protection data backs the scale of the improvement. Southwest border apprehensions have fallen 94 to 96 percent from Biden-era monthly averages, reaching historic lows with figures around 10,000 between ports of entry in recent mid-2026 months. Nationwide encounters remain at levels not seen in decades. While absolute zero is not the literal count—several thousand apprehensions still occur monthly and gotaways are not fully reflected in public numbers—the drop represents an unprecedented collapse in illegal entries. The numbers confirm that the border is more secure than at any point in modern history.

Hegseth and administration officials attribute the success to decisive action from day one. The Department of War surged resources to support Customs and Border Protection, establishing operational control that previous approaches failed to achieve. Policies that deterred illegal migration, ended catch-and-release practices, and projected strength produced immediate and lasting effects. The result is a border that no longer serves as an open invitation. American communities are safer, and the flow of illegal crossings has been reduced to a fraction of prior levels.

This sustained record demonstrates that strong leadership and enforcement work. For over a year the American people have seen the practical results of treating the border as a matter of national security. Hegseth’s blunt assessment captures the transformation: effectively zero illegal crossings where once there were tens of thousands every month. The data and the on-the-ground reality both affirm that the current approach has delivered what was promised. The border is under control again.
