The remnants of Typhoon Halong have unleashed powerful winds and heavy flooding across western Alaska, leaving communities struggling to recover from one of the strongest storms to hit the region in recent years.

Footage from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and Nunivak Island shows widespread damage as hurricane-force winds exceeding 100 mph tore through homes, infrastructure, and coastal defenses. Massive storm surges inundated low-lying areas, cutting off roads and forcing several evacuations.

Local authorities confirmed that emergency response teams are working around the clock to assist stranded residents and restore critical services. “Communities across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and Nunivak Island experienced hurricane-force winds, some over 100 mph, and significant storm surges, leading to widespread flooding,” officials said in a statement.

Meteorologists described Halong’s impact as “historic,” noting that the storm’s remnants intensified unusually far north due to warmer ocean temperatures — a rare event for the region.

State officials are assessing the full extent of the damage, while federal agencies prepare potential disaster assistance for affected Alaskan communities.
