During a December 22, 2025, White House briefing, President Donald Trump addressed questions regarding the disposal of 1.9 million barrels of Venezuelan crude oil recently seized by the United States, delivering his signature blunt response: “We're gonna keep it.” When pressed on whether the oil would be sold, Trump replied, “Maybe we'll sell. Maybe we'll keep it. We're keeping the ships also. Next question.”

The seized oil originates from the U.S. interception of the sanctioned tanker Skipper on December 10, off Venezuela’s coast. The operation was part of a Trump-directed blockade targeting the Maduro regime and its illicit financial and operational ties to Iran, aiming to curb funding sources for destabilizing activities in the region.

The announcement comes amid heightened global energy tensions, with international oil prices reportedly rising 3–5% following the seizure. Analysts note that control of the tanker and its cargo represents both a strategic and economic leverage point for the United States, strengthening energy security while sending a clear signal to adversarial regimes.

Trump’s remarks were delivered in a straightforward manner, reflecting his long-standing preference for decisive action in national security and economic affairs. Supporters hailed the move as a bold assertion of U.S. authority and strategic control over regional energy assets, while critics questioned the long-term legal and logistical considerations of retaining seized foreign property.

The Skipper interception highlights the Trump administration’s continued commitment to confronting illicit regimes, enforcing sanctions, and using American power to secure strategic resources, while maintaining flexibility in how seized assets are ultimately managed.
