Iran Admits Botched Qatar Bombing Run Left 3 Pilots Rotting in Captivity

Iran's Armed Forces General Staff is publicly acknowledging what officials in Doha and Washington have long known: a botched Iranian bombing run against Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military installation in the Gulf, ended in humiliation. General Mohammad Bagherzadeh, who leads the Iranian military's missing-personnel search committee, said in a letter to the International Committee of the Red Cross that three pilots — Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian and Omran Behraveshian — were captured alive after their Su-24 fighter jets were shot down by Qatari forces on March 2. A fourth crew member, identified as Brigadier General Majid Kazemi, was killed in the failed mission and his remains were returned to Iran for burial in Shiraz last month.

According to Tehran's account, the surviving airmen have been held incommunicado in Qatari custody for roughly six months, with no access to their families or Iranian officials. Qatar, however, is flatly rejecting the claim. Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said Doha was "surprised by these misleading statements," insisting Qatari forces recovered only the remains of a single pilot and that no living Iranian aircrew are in Qatari custody. Qatar's Defense Ministry had previously confirmed shooting down two Su-24 bombers in March after they ignored radio warnings while approaching Qatari airspace, marking the first air-to-air kill in the young Qatar Emiri Air Force's history.

The dispute lands amid delicate regional diplomacy following months of open conflict between Iran and the U.S.-Israel coalition, and it underscores just how badly Tehran's campaign against American assets in the Gulf backfired. Whether or not Qatar is quietly holding the pilots, Iran's public admission confirms what was already widely reported at the time: an Iranian strike package aimed at a U.S. military base was intercepted and destroyed before it ever reached its target. For a regime that spent months threatening American and Israeli forces across the region, the spectacle of its own generals begging the Red Cross to check on captured airmen is a remarkable reversal.
