A Syrian army weapons depot near al-Eis, south of Aleppo, erupted in a series of explosions overnight Monday, sending stored munitions rocketing into the sky and rattling towns for miles around. State media reported at least four people injured, including one hit by shrapnel and two treated for breathing difficulties, as secondary detonations from the burning depot kept emergency crews at bay for hours. It marks the fourth such incident at a Syrian military storage site this month alone, following a blast that killed 11 personnel at a site in Deir Ezzor and a separate explosion that killed 14 and wounded 11 in Idlib province earlier in September. Syria's Defense Ministry says it is investigating but has not yet announced a cause.

The recurring nature of these blasts, at least 16 such incidents have struck Syrian military sites since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in late 2024, has fueled persistent speculation about sabotage, even as Damascus has stopped short of publicly naming a suspect. Local experts have floated the possibility that outside actors could be targeting the country's aging, poorly secured arsenals, though no government official has formally accused any nation, including Israel, of involvement. For a country still working to stabilize its security forces after more than a decade of civil war, the steady drumbeat of unexplained explosions at its own weapons depots raises uncomfortable questions about just how much control the new government actually has over what remains of Syria's military stockpiles.
