President Donald Trump says a major but underreported shift is underway at the U.S. southern border, with millions of undocumented immigrants choosing to leave the country voluntarily rather than risk arrest. Speaking in recent remarks, the president described “self-deportation” as a powerful outcome of restored enforcement and deterrence policies.

“The self-deportation is something nobody talks about,” President Trump said. “Millions are self-deporting. They don’t want to be captured.” According to administration officials, the renewed emphasis on enforcement, removals, and interior compliance has altered behavior across migrant networks, encouraging voluntary departures before apprehension.

The White House points to Department of Homeland Security figures indicating approximately 2.5 million departures since January, including roughly 1.9 million voluntary exits processed through streamlined reporting and departure systems. Officials argue that these numbers reflect a fundamental change in incentives, driven by consistent enforcement rather than catch-and-release policies.

President Trump also touted what he called a historic turnaround at the border itself. “We took the worst border in history — in two months, we turned it into the strongest border in history,” he said. Customs and Border Protection data shows illegal crossings down by approximately 95 percent by March 2025, with November encounters dropping to fewer than 8,000, among the lowest levels ever recorded.

Supporters of the administration’s approach say the data confirms a long-held argument: clear rules, firm enforcement, and swift consequences reduce illegal migration without the need for mass roundups. By restoring credibility to border controls, they argue, the government has achieved compliance at a scale not seen in years.

The administration maintains that the strategy prioritizes national sovereignty, public safety, and fairness to legal immigrants while reducing strain on border communities. As enforcement continues, the White House signals that self-deportation will remain a central — and measurable — outcome of its border security agenda.
