Orthodox Jewish demonstrators took to the streets of New York this week for an anti-Zionist counter-protest, displaying signs rejecting the identification of Judaism and the Jewish people with political Zionism.

Footage from the demonstration shows visibly Orthodox protesters standing behind police barricades with signs expressing opposition to Zionism and challenging claims that opposition to the State of Israel is inherently antisemitic.

The demonstration took place alongside a separate pro-Israel gathering, with the two sides exchanging sharply different messages over Israel, Zionism and Jewish identity. Current posts from the scene reported that the anti-Zionist demonstrators were confronted and verbally heckled by people on the opposing side.

Voice of Rabbis, which circulated footage from the demonstration, used the scene to reiterate its position that Judaism and Zionism should not be treated as synonymous. The organization describes its mission as presenting a Torah-based opposition to Zionism and maintaining a distinction between Jewish religious identity and the State of Israel.

The demonstration comes amid several public anti-Zionist displays involving Orthodox Jews in New York in recent days, including a large banner displayed above the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Williamsburg carrying a message separating Judaism from Zionism.
