Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent delivered a striking claim about Iran's economy this weekend, saying the country will have 'no oil on the water' for the first time since it began pumping crude. 'You know, right now, the score: barrels out of the Strait, U.S. about 1.1 billion, Iran zero,' Bessent said in an interview on The Axios Show. 'For the first time in history, since they started pumping oil, they will have no oil on the water this week. They will have no revenues.' Bessent tied the claim to the administration's Operation Economic Outcast, a sanctions push targeting Iran's financial networks, ship registries, and front companies, and said Iran loaded zero crude onto tankers in September, a number he said is backed by shipping data providers Kpler and Vortexa.

It's a significant claim, and not one without pushback. Goldman Sachs analysts flagged last week that broader Persian Gulf oil exports have actually climbed back to roughly prewar levels, driven in part by what they called 'dark exports,' unofficial shipments that can mask where oil is actually coming from and complicate claims that any single country's exports have truly hit zero. Bessent had previously said Iran's final oil deliveries to China would arrive within about two weeks, framing the shutdown as the culmination of a broader pressure campaign that also includes military action and a naval blockade he says has left Tehran economically isolated 'like this never happened before.' Whether the zero-revenue claim holds up over time, or whether workarounds quietly keep some oil moving, is likely to become clearer in the weeks ahead.
