NARITA SCARE: Malaysia Airlines Flight Aborts Takeoff After Engine Catches Fire

A Malaysia Airlines flight bound for Kuala Lumpur was forced to abort takeoff at Tokyo Narita Airport after its left engine began emitting black smoke and sparks. Flight MH89, an Airbus A330 carrying 148 passengers and 14 crew members, was accelerating down the runway on August 20, 2026, when the problem became visible. The pilots quickly abandoned the takeoff, bringing the aircraft to a safe stop. Everyone on board escaped without injury.

Video from the scene shows the jet on the runway with thick smoke trailing from the engine area as it slowed and came to a halt. The sudden appearance of smoke and sparks during the critical acceleration phase created a tense moment for those watching. Ground crews and emergency responders moved quickly once the aircraft stopped. The successful abort prevented what could have become a far more serious incident.

Narita’s Runway A was closed for approximately two and a half hours while authorities inspected the surface and recovered any debris. Malaysia Airlines canceled the flight and began rebooking passengers on alternative services. The aircraft itself was taken out of service for a full technical examination to determine the exact cause of the engine issue. Investigators are expected to review maintenance records and the engine’s performance data.

The incident highlights both the risks of mechanical failure during takeoff and the effectiveness of pilot training and emergency procedures. With all 162 people on board unharmed and the runway returned to service after a limited closure, the outcome was the best possible under the circumstances. Malaysia Airlines and Japanese aviation authorities continue to examine the aircraft as passengers are assisted with new travel arrangements.
