Dramatic aerial footage out of Long Beach shows a scene few residents there have ever witnessed: massive waves crashing up and over rooftops along the Alamitos Peninsula, sending foam and seawater surging through neighborhood streets. The swell overwhelmed the seawall and boardwalk protecting the beachfront community, forcing emergency crews to evacuate residents as conditions grew too dangerous to stay put. City officials responded by shutting down the Peninsula to vehicle traffic, allowing only residents through as crews scrambled to assess the damage. For a coastal community used to living close to the water, this wasn't a typical rough day at the beach, it was something residents described as unlike anything they had seen in decades.

Behind the chaos is a strange twist of geography and timing. The waves are the product of the remnants of Hurricane Marie, a storm system spinning hundreds of miles offshore that never came close to making landfall in California, yet still managed to generate a powerful swell rolling in from the west-southwest. That swell found its way through gaps in the jetties and breakwaters meant to shield the Alamitos Peninsula, an area long known as the most vulnerable stretch of coastline whenever big surf rolls through. Making matters worse, the swell arrived at nearly the same time as unusually high tides pushing past seven feet, a combination that overwhelmed the barriers that normally keep the ocean where it belongs. It's a reminder that a hurricane doesn't need to make landfall to leave its mark hundreds of miles away.

On the ground, the impact has been serious enough to force real decisions about people's homes. Long Beach fire officials evacuated roughly 20 homes along Seaside Walk, between 63rd and 67th Place, after determining that the seawall and boardwalk in the area had been compromised by the pounding surf. Officials also reported damaged and cracked concrete in between several of the affected homes, raising concerns about foundational stability beyond just the immediate flooding. Crews have been working with sandbags and pumps to manage the standing water and limit further damage, while nearby parking lots and beach areas remain closed as a precaution. Some residents said the flooding wasn't entirely unfamiliar to the low-lying parts of the Peninsula, but even longtime locals admitted this round hit harder and faster than expected.

The danger isn't over yet. Officials have warned that hazardous surf conditions are expected to persist through at least September 8, meaning the same combination of swell and high tides could continue to threaten the area in the days ahead. Beachgoers have been urged to stay well clear of the water, both because of the ongoing flood risk and because of the strong rip currents that typically accompany surf of this size. For now, the Alamitos Peninsula remains in a holding pattern, watching the tide charts and hoping the barriers that failed once can hold the next time the ocean comes calling.
