Car Fully Submerged in Pool Following Steep Driveway Crash.
Driver Crashes Car into Backyard Pool After Claiming Brake Failure
A Massachusetts driver ended up in a backyard swimming pool after his car’s brakes reportedly failed while he was delivering packages to neighbors. Nick Mascetta was driving his Hyundai Elantra down a steep driveway in Northborough when he lost braking ability. Faced with the choice of slamming into the house or the pool, he steered toward the water. The vehicle crashed through a metal fence and landscaping before becoming fully submerged.
Mascetta escaped without injury by rolling down a window and swimming out of the submerged car. He later explained that he was simply trying to be helpful by delivering packages for neighbors who were away on vacation. The packages remained in the trunk as the sedan sank. Homeowner and first responders confirmed no one was hurt in the unusual incident. Video footage later showed recovery crews using a crane and straps to lift the waterlogged vehicle from the pool as water drained from the chassis.
The steep driveway conditions in the neighborhood contributed to the sudden loss of control, according to the driver’s account. Local fire and emergency teams responded quickly to the scene on Franklin Circle. Once the car was extracted, attention turned to assessing any property damage and the condition of the vehicle. Incidents involving vehicles entering residential pools are rare but can create significant recovery challenges and potential safety hazards for both drivers and nearby residents.
This event serves as a reminder of the importance of vehicle maintenance, particularly brake systems, especially on properties with steep inclines. Mascetta’s decision to prioritize avoiding the house minimized structural damage and allowed him to walk away unharmed. Neighbors and responders expressed relief that the outcome was limited to a dramatic but non-injurious recovery operation.
