A wild new robot unveiled in Shanghai is turning heads for doing something no other machine has managed before: reshaping its entire body on the fly. HFUN-TECH debuted what it's calling the world's first transformable intrinsic humanoid at the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, held July 17 through 20 in the city. The robot, standing roughly 60 centimeters tall, can autonomously shift between a wheeled bipedal humanoid mode for smooth indoor movement and a four-legged quadruped mode built for rougher outdoor terrain. What makes this especially impressive is that the switch isn't manually triggered, the robot reads its environment and decides on its own which body type will work best.
Under the hood, the design relies on what the company describes as a unified control framework, essentially a shared brain and shared components that let the same physical unit function competently in either configuration. In practical terms, that means one machine can roll efficiently through a living room on wheels, then reconfigure itself into a four-legged stance to confidently cross grass or uneven ground outside. Demonstration footage reportedly shows the robot handling packages with its dual arms, gliding indoors, and adapting seamlessly once it steps outside. It's a level of versatility that most home robots simply don't offer, since they're typically built for one environment and struggle in another.
Perhaps the most surprising feature, though, is just how portable and flexible this thing really is. Thanks to its compact size and design, the robot can reportedly be picked up and carried like a suitcase when it's not in use. Even stranger, in one of its transformed modes, a person can actually ride it as a personal mobility device to get around, essentially turning the robot into makeshift transportation. That kind of dual-purpose functionality, shifting from a walking companion to a rideable gadget, is virtually unheard of in consumer robotics right now.
Beyond its shape-shifting party trick, the robot is packed with hardware aimed at everyday usefulness and interaction. It comes equipped with a flip camera, a 45-degree tilted interaction screen, and a multi-microphone array, features clearly built with content creation, voice commands, and casual companionship in mind. HFUN-TECH is positioning the device for home use, creative projects, and outdoor excursions alike, hoping to appeal to everyday consumers rather than just industrial buyers. Its debut lands right alongside a wave of similarly ambitious shape-shifting robots from other Chinese companies at the same conference, signaling that adaptable, multi-mode robotics may be the next major battleground in personal robotics innovation.
