OPPOSITION LEADER BACK IN VENEZUELA: Trump Hopes Machado Is Safe After Her Nobel Medal Gift

President Donald Trump says a trade deal with Canada is "getting close," but he came with a harsh accusation attached. In an interview with Fox 2 Detroit's Roop Raj on Sunday, October 25, 2026, ahead of a Michigan rally, Trump claimed that Canada "has been making $90 billion a year off us for years and years" and has "taken advantage of our country." He also said, "I love Canada; I love everything about it," before adding the catch: "other than some of the leaders." Trump said any agreement would be long term and would finally be fair after what he called 50 years of bad trade practices, but he gave no details on what a deal would include, no timeline, and no date for talks to resume.

The $90 billion figure is much higher than the official numbers I found. The U.S. Trade Representative puts the 2025 U.S. goods trade deficit with Canada at $48.3 billion, out of about $715.5 billion in total goods trade. The U.S. also ran a $27.7 billion services surplus with Canada that year, which narrows the overall gap to roughly $21 billion. Trump didn't explain how he arrived at his number, and the Canadian government had not responded in the reports I found. All of this is playing out while tariffs weigh on both economies and the USMCA framework is being reworked, with the auto industry especially anxious because parts cross the border back and forth.
