Satmar’s historic Beis Medrash Hagadol on Rodney Street in Williamsburg has reopened following an extensive renovation and expansion project designed to accommodate the growing number of mispallelim gathering at the longstanding center of the kehillah.

The project significantly transformed the interior while expanding the usable space of the building. Plans reported when construction began included raising the roof, adding another level and rebuilding the existing ezras nashim area to provide additional capacity.

The Beis Medrash has served as a central Satmar institution for more than half a century and was closely associated with the Divrei Yoel, Rav Yoel Teitelbaum, and subsequently the Beirach Moshe, Rav Moshe Teitelbaum. It remains a major center of the Satmar community in Williamsburg.

The building was temporarily closed while the most extensive construction was carried out, with plans from the outset to have the main work completed in time for the Selichos period.

The renewed Beis Medrash subsequently opened for the first Selichos, when large numbers of Satmar Chassidim gathered there for davening. Reporting from the reopening described the building as both renovated and expanded following the construction project.
