Frum Families Leave New York for Growing Jewish Community in Rural Florida
A growing number of frum families from New York are relocating to a newly established Orthodox community in rural Florida, drawn by more affordable housing, lower living expenses, and the opportunity to raise their children in a developing Torah community.
The development, known as Lakefront Estates, is located in Glades County near Okeechobee. It has attracted interest from families in established Jewish neighborhoods, including Brooklyn and Lakewood, as housing costs and other financial pressures continue to weigh on large households.
According to recent reports, approximately 60 Orthodox families have already settled in the community, while more than 100 additional families are considering relocating. Other reports have cited higher estimates of current residents, and the exact number of families living there has not been independently confirmed.
The emerging community is developing the infrastructure needed to support frum family life, including schools, shuls, and other communal facilities. These institutions are particularly important for families considering a move far from established Chareidi neighborhoods.
Affordability is a major attraction. Families who might struggle to purchase spacious homes in New York are finding different housing options in the Florida development, where the cost of living can be lower.
Concerns about antisemitism have also featured in discussions surrounding the move. Recent reporting highlighted families who cited both financial pressures and worries about the environment in New York as reasons for considering a fresh start.
The growth of Lakefront Estates reflects a broader interest among frum families in establishing communities beyond the traditional centers of Jewish life, while maintaining the schools, shuls, and communal support that are essential to their way of life.
