QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA — A yacht ran aground off Lady Elliot Island on Tuesday, prompting a dramatic air rescue that saved the life of an injured sailor.
Officials said the man, believed to be in his 60s, sustained injuries when his vessel became stranded near the reef. A helicopter crew was dispatched to the scene and successfully winched him to safety.
The sailor was later transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities praised the swift response of the rescue team, noting that the mission was carried out in challenging conditions.
The incident serves as a reminder of both the risks of open-water sailing and the lifesaving role of Australia’s air rescue crews.
