BYD’s premium Yangwang U8L SUV proved its structural strength this week after enduring multiple drops of a massive palm trunk onto its roof, part of a dramatic durability demonstration highlighting the vehicle’s reinforced frame.

The test involved a nearly 2-ton, 13-meter palm tree dropped from a height of 4.7 meters, producing impacts of up to 50 kilojoules—comparable to a heavy appliance falling from a high-rise. Workers repeated the drop three times, each from increasing heights, to simulate extreme real-world scenarios such as typhoon debris impacts, which are common along China’s coastal regions.

Despite the intense force, inspectors reported no visible structural damage, smooth door operation, and intact glass. Only slight dents appeared along the exterior roof skin, while the A- and B-pillars—critical components for occupant safety—remained solid.

The Yangwang U8L, priced between $150,000 and $180,000, is part of BYD’s push into the luxury electric SUV market. The model features four electric motors delivering over 1,100 horsepower, extended-range capability, and advanced off-road functions. It builds on the original U8’s suite of headline-grabbing features, including tank-turn mobility and even an amphibious mode for water operations.

As global EV competition intensifies, BYD is using high-profile stunts like this to signal its ambitions in the top tier of the market—demonstrating that Chinese luxury EVs can combine engineering toughness with technological sophistication.
