October 22, 2025, after a gunman opened fire near a pro-government protest camp, setting off chaos and flames in the heart of the capital.
Authorities said a 70-year-old man fired several shots at tents belonging to government supporters stationed outside the parliament building. One person was injured, and the attack triggered fires that engulfed parts of the camp, before the shooter was quickly subdued and arrested by police.
The incident occurred amid weeks of unrest tied to allegations of election fraud and media censorship under President Aleksandar Vučić. Opposition groups have accused the ruling Serbian Progressive Party of manipulating results and silencing dissent — charges the government denies.
In a televised statement, President Vučić condemned the shooting as a “terrorist attack”, claiming it was part of an opposition effort to “incite fear and destabilize Serbia.”
The National Assembly area remains under heavy police presence as investigators examine the scene. Authorities have yet to release details about the suspect’s motive or background.
The attack marks one of the most serious escalations in Serbia’s political crisis this year, as both sides continue to trade blame over the country’s deepening divisions.
