Guatemala's Fuego Volcano Erupts Violently, Nationwide Orange Alert Declared

Guatemala's Volcán de Fuego, one of Central America's most active and dangerous stratovolcanoes, erupted with dramatic intensity overnight on August 3 and into August 4, 2026, prompting authorities to declare a nationwide orange alert. Striking video captured from a nearby residential area shows a massive ash plume tearing into the sky above the crater, accompanied by vivid incandescent lava fountains and flows illuminating the darkness. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction, known as CONRED, working alongside the country's volcanological institute INSIVUMEH, moved quickly to order preventive evacuations of communities sitting in the volcano's shadow, including El Porvenir and Las Lajitas in the municipality of San Juan Alotenango.

Officials say the eruption has entered a paroxysmal phase, with lava fountains surging between 200 and 300 meters into the air and ash plumes climbing as high as 6,000 to 7,000 meters above sea level. Of particular concern to emergency responders are the pyroclastic density currents, fast-moving flows of hot gas and volcanic material, which have been recorded traveling as far as 7 kilometers down ravines including the Seca and Ceniza channels. Ash fall from the eruption has already begun spreading across a wide swath of the country, with drifting plumes reported to extend more than 130 kilometers to the southwest.

Volcanologists caution that the current eruptive activity could persist for anywhere between 24 and 72 hours, leaving nearby communities on high alert as the situation continues to develop. Fuego has a long and destructive history, including a catastrophic 2018 eruption that killed dozens of people and buried entire villages, a tragedy still fresh in the minds of many Guatemalans. With evacuations underway and disaster response teams mobilized, authorities are urging residents in at-risk zones to heed evacuation orders and avoid the volcano's ravines and slopes until the danger has fully passed.
